Drag Files Here

(Indexed 2009-08-14):

I recently installed the CTP of SharePoint Workspace 2010. All was fine until I came across something I hadn't seen before. When ever I would go to a SharePoint site and try to Upload Multiple Files, I would be presented with a "Drag Files Here" window. So being curious, I tried dragging and dropping a file here. When I click OK, it would try to upload the file to my document library, but would fail. After doing some research (there were no results for "Drag Files Here" and "SharePoint" at b...(truncated)...

Programmatically creating views for a SharePoint discussion forum

(Indexed 2009-08-13):

As you can see I'm still working on sites, lists and views and I ran into another challenge. It started out very basic. I wanted to create a discussion forum list on a site. // Create new listlistGuid = newWeb.Lists.Add("Forum", "ForumDescription", "Forum", "00BFEA71-6A49-43FA-B535-D15C05500108", 108, "", SPListTemplate.QuickLaunchOptions.Off);SPList forumList = newWeb.Lists[listGuid]; After succesfully creating the forum list I wanted to add a custom view to the list. Dealing with the "No parameterless constructor defined for this object" on 'changed' Page Layout

(Indexed 2009-08-13):

When we initially launched one of our publishing page layouts, we had a Page Layout that contained a third party web part. After launch, we realized that this web part either needed to be updated or ripped out, so for the time being, we ripped out the web part (uninstall, the whole nine yards). However, we still needed to use the Page Layout, just without the web parts pre-defaulted on the page. Low and behold, the first time we try to create the Page Layout, we get the "No parameterless constru...(truncated)...

SharePoint Automatically redirecting HTTP to HTTPS

(Indexed 2009-08-05):

If you want to automatically redirect from HTTP to HTTPS on a SharePoint site, there is an easy way to do it using Alternate Access Mappings.  I have seen suggestions involving IIS redirects which is something that I have done in the past but there is actually no need to do this. First you must configure your site to use HTTPS so that the public name is the HTTPS name (creating or extending a Web Application using HTTPS).  Next, define an Internal Name in AAM using the HTTP protocol, ...(truncated)...

InfoPath Bulk update forms in a SharePoint library

(Indexed 2009-07-30):

After a customer of mine ran hopelessly behind processing forms in a SharePoint library they requested a utility to automate the update all the forms in bulk.Initially, I thought this might be a bit of a pain but once I got into it it was a pretty simple little app. It’s written as a windows application and simply loops through each form in a library and makes updates based on your the data you enter. SharePoint Search Not returning results for Email messages (.msg)

Cleaning Up the 1 to 5;#5# number string from your Custom Survey Views.

(Indexed 2009-07-21):

1. This is something I do after I have created a custom Survey View for reporting. For some reason, SharePoint pulls in the Rating numbers as “1 to 5;#5#” from the database. Using the native string functions in Designer, you can strip out this “1 to 5;#_#” junk to leave just the raw rating number.2. Open up Designer and open your Survey View page (ie. AllDataView.aspx) and highlight the first data cell UNDER the column name.[Image] 3. Right-click and select Edit Formula....(truncated)...

Creating a custom view that filters on the current user or [Me]

(Indexed 2009-07-16):

Earlier this week I was creating custom list views for a customer solution. On of the specifications was that the view needed a filter that only showed the documents that were created by the current user. You can do this using the user interface by specifying that the Created By field needed to be equal to [Me]. Troubleshooting SSRS 2008 and SharePoint Integration

(Indexed 2009-07-01):

I recently implemented SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services in SharePoint Integration mode. Although I followed all the directions and walkthroughs, it took me two days to get it implemented. I was installing SSRS on an existing MOSS WFE, and though every indication showed a successful installation, it would not integrate. I finally did get it working, though. Here is what I did. While I was testing the broken SSRS implementation the symptoms included: No report would open or display.I could no...(truncated)...

Managing Risks in Sharepoint 1 - Aligning the Environments

(Indexed 2009-06-29):

INTRODUCTIONI just want to share with you my experience in managing Sharepoint environments (both server and custom code). Before, I came from a development background and purely think as a developer. As a developer, I used to think that as long as my code is bug-free and memory-leak-free then I'm safe. Now, I've got some experience in managing the servers, I can share with you the things that we have to be aware of more than just having a bug-free and memory-leak-free code. MOSS Manual Navigation Links Are Static - DANGEROUS

SharePoint Search Inputs and IE6

SO...you have users that STILL use IE6. There, there, I know. Let's get out our IE6 voodoo doll and start a'pinnin. You've got a fantastic non-boring search input. It puts the pop in wow. Until you check on your IE6 test site, and #$(*%)#@(*%^)(*!@$(). Nothing. Well, you can just add this bit to your master page somewhere in the head tag:Where "#search" is the id of your search. SharePoint and FIPS Compliance

(Indexed 2009-06-24):

I while back (about 18 months ago I think) my team ran into an issue while working on a system for the Department of Defense. The issue occurs when the "System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing and signing" security setting is enabled through Group Policy or Local Security Policy on a WSS or MOSS server. After much research and gnashing of teeth, we finally traced the issue back to the fact that the .NET Framework uses AES encryption as the default. Unfortunatel...(truncated)...

Small SPQuery tip (How to get rid of "Cannot complete this action" error)

(Indexed 2009-06-20):

You try to run an SPQuery and get a "Cannot complete this action" error. I have seen users who think it's a permissions issue and they try to use elevatedprivileges. Remember, if you get this error when running an SPQuery object, the first thing you should look for is the query itself. Because of a small semantical mistake the query will not run and SharePoint will throw this error. These mistakes are often difficult to locate with eye. I'd suggest use a tool, such as U2U CAML builder...(...(truncated)...

Large items in SharePoint recycle bin fixed ... er ... worked around

I've written about it, and written about it, and written about it some more. A very large (70gb) object in the SharePoint recycle bin resembles a steel wool hairball -- you know it's there, it hurts like crazy, and you just can't get rid of it. Microsoft gave me two choices...I could wait for the WSS/MOSS Service Pack(s) 2, because they're supposed to fix the problem. How to add Target Audiences site column to your list and complete list of IDs and Display Names of SharePoint Site Columns

Troubleshooting Filtered Views

I was helping a co-worker this week with a problem he was having with some views he had created. For some reason, whenever he chose to filter by any column, the view would return zero results. Maybe some of you have seen this before, but I hadn't, so I was temporarily off into the weeds. Also, they would like to learn the stages of ECM and Collaboration adoption as well as how a platform aligned solution contributes to the success of their infrastructure.[Image]Here is a Soluti...(truncated)...

Silverlight XAP File Out of Date When Built with Expression Blend

(Indexed 2009-05-21):

The latest project I am working on involves some rather tight integration between Silverlight and SharePoint so Im getting my feet wet with these tools in the SharePoint-o-Sphere. I recently ran into an issue where the .XAP file that is needed for Silverlight would not update properly whenever I built the solution within Expression Blend.  If I switched over to Visual Studio, then it would work perfectly.  A quick search showed no conclusive fix for this issue so I came up wit...(truncated)...

How to delete PageLayouts and MasterPages

(Indexed 2009-05-21):

This is the first post on (hopefully) a series of posts on how to work with page layouts, masterpages and the style library - the utlimate nightmare of every deployment manager when it comes to feature-based deployment of SharePoint solutions. I will start with posting something, that Katrien de Graeve posted already on 20th of January 2007, but it is one big piece of important information when trying to manage your two most important libraries in a WCM scenario:How do I overcome the "This item ...(truncated)...

Potentielle Sicherheitslcke in SharePoint-Installationen

(Indexed 2009-05-20):

Uploading Content Into SharePoint (Let me count the ways)

(Indexed 2009-05-19):

Many developers new to SharePoint want to know how to get content into SharePoint from another application. This application is usually a remote application either running in a asp.net application or a desktop application. The developers may be familiar with the SharePoint object model and how to use it to put content into SharePoint. However, when it comes to doing this remotely there seems to be a lot of confusion. This confusion is brought on by the fact that there are numerous out of the box...(truncated)...

Windows Server 2008/MOSS 2007/SQL Server 2008

Problem:I have two servers (WebServer and DatabaseServer). Both are Windows Server 2008. I have MOSS 2007 installed on WebServer and SQLServer 2008 installed on DatabaseServer. I could not get MOSS to use a content database from the DatabaseServer.Solution:It turns out that I had to do several things. First, I had to go into SQL Server Configuration Manager and enable Named Pips. TCP/IP was enabled already, but I believe that both have to be enabled to get things to work.Second, I had to go...(truncated)...

CompleteSharepoint.NET v2.0 - Content Management System CMS Built on top of WSS 3.0

(Indexed 2009-05-18):

INTRODUCTIONHi everyone, I thought I would love to share with you my latest development. I've ever written CompleteSharepoint 1.0 that was released months ago. It's basically a CMS built on top of WSS. It's meant to be an alternative to MOSS. You will not want to spend $50K on a simple information website with MOSS, will you? Well, I won't.Anyway, I've released version 1.0 which has a lot of defects of course. I've now re-written the code to be a lot better and I've j...(truncated)...

How-To: Create a SharePoint list programmatically

(Indexed 2009-05-15):

This is not rocket-science and probably back in beginning of 2007 (or 2003? [Image]) would have last raised someone from her/his seat. But it took me quite some time to find a fully working example of how to create a SharePoint SPList programmatically, add some fields of different types and add those to the default view. Sounds pretty simple, but has some traps in it. So here goes my final (simplified) code, take from it what you can use:private void CreateEmailTemplatesList(SPWeb web){ Guid ...(truncated)...

How-To: Overcome missing Exists() function on SharePoint objects like SiteGroups, RoleDefinitions, Lists etc.

(Indexed 2009-05-15):

Especially when I'm wiriting Feature Receivers, I need to know if a certain SharePoint objects is present or not. A .Exists() method would be great on all the nice collections we are given back from SPRoleDefinition, SPGroup, SPList and so on. This posts will show you how to overcome this in a convenient way. No rocket sience here, only collection information from various posts and putting them together. The shortest way to implement an .Exists() function is by using LINQ Extensions:SPGroup.E...(truncated)...

IE8 Security Changes

(Indexed 2009-05-14):

I have just discovered that, unlike IE7, in IE8 when you open a new browser it shares its authentication information with other opened instances.  This is VERY bad for anyone trying to sign in as different users at the same time (e.g. using SharePoints Sign in as Different User option) in different browser windows for testing purposes. This means, for example, if you sign in as SharePoint Administrator in a browser session, then open up a new IE8 window using the normal quick launch icon a...(truncated)...

Figuring out a alternative to Cross-Site Lookups

Add Alerts to All Sites

(Indexed 2009-05-13):

I recently had a request from a client that would allow them to automatically display a Notification on all Sites and Pages. This was easy enough to do because I was already stapling a custom page layout to the publishing infrastructure along with a custom Master Page and CSS. The Master Page was altered to include a pointer to a hidealert.css file residing in a document library I had created on the root site. The Page Layout was then altered to include an IFrame that loaded an HTML file called ...(truncated)...

The impact of browser speed on your SharePoint app

(Indexed 2009-05-12):

To me the browser discussion has always been on standards, some additional buttons and open-source ideals. Rendering speed has never been an issue. The other way around, the browser had never been a factor in the performance of my applications. I tested load times of a certain page or application in a single browser, no more than that. A year ago this changed for the first time when it appeared that IE7 was dramatically faster in displaying InfoPath forms than IE6 (http://www.sharepointblogs....(truncated)...

Customizing the ContentQuery WebPart: How to create Header/Footer, UL/LI and other "impossible" things

(Indexed 2009-05-07):

I was spending a lot of time trying to figure out how I could not only customize the appearance of each data item in a ContentQuery (or Content-By-Query) WebPart. There are several good posts made within the SharePoint community, but almost all of them concentrate on how to customize the itemstyle.xsl file. However, this is not what I want. Filter List-View by Workflow Status

Today i wanted to create some views on a list of change requests. All change requests have to be reviewed by the solution architect and have then to be approved by the project board. Working on a MOSS collaboration site, I decided to use the standard "Review" and "Approval" workflows. In order to give the reviewers and the approvers a simpler view on all change requests, I decided to create some additional views that would filter the "Change Request" list items by the workflow status of the "Rev...(truncated)...

Architectural Patterns for Silverlight-on-SharePoint

(Indexed 2009-04-01):

The main challenge in silverlight development on sharepoint that this poses is that the code in the Silverlight control runs in the user's Web browser, and not on the server like a normal Web Part. Therefore, unlike a normal Web Part, the Silverlight UI does not have access to the SharePoint object model. The aim, then, is to somehow provide an infrastructure that enables communication between the client-side Silverlight UI and server-side code that has access to SharePoint objects and data....(truncated)...

Content Query Web Part: getting a full dump of the raw XML

(Indexed 2009-03-17):

Ive been doing some really cool stuff with the Content Query Web Part (CQWP) lately, so Im gonna put together a few posts on some of the nice challenges that I had to tackle. After playing around with XSLT for a while now, I have grown to love it and I think it is awesome and really flexible. Content Query Web Part: filtering on a text field removing results with blank or null values

(Indexed 2009-03-17):

This should be an easy pick for developers. When you want to query items and omit results that have a blank or null value in a text field, simply use the greater than 0 filter chaining operator. [Image] Computer Network Name is a text field in my example. I want to only return results when that field has values. [Image]

Content Query Web Part: querying by content type, grouping results by the parent list

(Indexed 2009-03-17):

Consider the following scenario :An existing content type spread across multiple listsA CQWP is required to query the items of that content type and group the results by the list which they belong toThe group headings have to be links to the actual listThere should be no visible change to the existing stuffThere is an existing ItemAdded event handler attached to the content typeThe challenge is, that by default the items returned from the CQWP don’t actually know much more about the parent...(truncated)...

Can't use IP address when exporting linked SharePoint list from Access 2007 into SharePoint..... use server name instead

(Indexed 2009-03-16):

I ran into this little issue and wanted to record it on my blog in case others experience the same error that I had run into today. So today I was using Access 2007 with a MOSS 2007 site to export a decent size list (1500+ items). Using SharePoint Metadata in Word Documents The Lookup Column Issue

(Indexed 2009-03-13):

Using Word templates in combination with Content Types in SharePoint gives a user a rich experience in using SharePoint metadata in the content of a Word document. For example: if you are making the meeting minutes for a certain meeting, you would like to have the Meeting Date as meta data of the document, but that same Meeting Date is probably also used in the minutes document itself somewhere. So we could insert meta data columns as Document Property Quick Parts in the Word document. That way, e...(truncated)...

Custom SharePoint Applications Logging Framework

(Indexed 2009-03-12):

One of the things that I could never quite figure out about the SharePoint API is that they expose just about everything under the sun but when it comes to using their diagnostics / logging framework, it's all hands off. Granted, if you have the MOSS version, you can use PortalLog.LogString() method to write entries to the SharePoint ULS but for me that wasn't good enough. Can I have SharePoint Installed on my Netbook with Win2k8?

Netbooks have been around for about 18 months now since the ASUS eee first appeared on our shelves. This time last year I heard HP were creating a netbook and being a bit of HP fan I decided I wanted to try on. I feel I am always on the move, from one meeting at work to another or driving someone to talk about SharePoint or the Learning Gateway. SharePoint and SQL Licensing

(Indexed 2009-03-10):

Every time I think I have a handle on licensing, I turn out to be wrong. A co-worker brought this to my attention the other day. It appears that for every licensed SharePoint user who accesses a SharePoint site, an additional SQL Server CAL must also be purchased. This nearly doubles the cost of deploying SharePoint on any significant scale. I didn't want to believe this, because my assumption had been that since the SharePoint service account accesses data on behalf of the user, a SQL li...(truncated)...

The SharePoint recycle bin entry that just won't die

If you want to use UserControls in SharePoint web parts you can use SmartPart (http://www.codeplex.com/smartpart). But you can also build a web part that load a UserControl yourself. If you want to do it yourself you start out by opening Visual Studio (whether you use 2005 or 2008 doesn't matter). Next you create a new project of the type "ASP.NET Web Application". The Server Revolution

(Indexed 2009-02-10):

Moving the server from the data-centre to the desktop Lifting my gaze from the code for a few seconds, one of the things that has always stuck we with SharePoint is the similarity its impact has on businesses to the PC Revolution. I like analogies – they provide a framework and a perspective from which to ...(truncated)...

10 Best Intranets of 2009

(Indexed 2009-01-18):

Technology Platform: Unification Begins In all previous years, the only conclusion regarding technology was that there was no universal platform for designing good intranets. Winners typically used an extraordinarily wide diversity of implementation packages. Although this conclusion continues to hold this year, it is less pronounced. Among the winning intranets, many are built on a single intranet platform that integrates most of the supporting features they need including a content management...(truncated)...

Using the SchedulePicker

(Indexed 2009-01-18):

There isnt much to find about the SchedulePicker Class (in the Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls namespace) which is very handy when it comes to creating a SPSchedule . The question if of course, when do you need to have a SPSchedule? Well it could be very handy for instance when creating application pages that handle the scheduling of custom timer jobs. So instead of creating your own dropdowns with all the days of the week and all the possible times and converting to those the proper schedule.....(truncated)...

Stretching images can be achieved with a percentage as a width/height value

(Indexed 2009-01-18):

I keep forgetting about this really cool feature - image sizes can be proportionate to the browser window size and shrink/expand as you change the browser window size. This can be very useful in many situations where fixed images cause difficulties in flexible/liquid site designs and layouts. Picture galleries are always a candidate for flexible thumbnail sizes.A container (div) sized as a percentage (ie 50%) will stretch together with the browser and always be 50% of the viewable browser area. SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 y Modalidad Integrada en SharePoint

(Indexed 2008-12-19):

(Indexed 2008-12-19):

As you probably have heard, SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 was released on December 15, 2008. Why is this significant to the SharePoint Community? Because, the calls that SSRS makes to the SharePoint Object Model are optimized. This in turn reduces the latency when you compare Integrated Mode against Native Mode. With that in mind, I set to download the Service Pack and find out how this would reflect on my SharePoint Installation. While the benchmarking between both Virtual Machines was limited...(truncated)...
