I' m Done Here
(Indexed 2006-07-11):
I have been using this xWiki for quite some time now; I like wiki's and it is a perfect solution for a knowledge site such as this. However, I have more problems and spend too much time administering than I should. In addition, it seems lately, the server is down or unavailable too often. So, I have made a more permanent change. In addition, I have my own domain so if I change in the future it shouldn't have any impact on individuals subscribed to notifications and feeds. Here is what I have ...(truncated)...
Obtaining IIS Virtual Server Information for the Current Instance of SharePoint
(Indexed 2006-06-22):
Today I was challenged with obtaining the physical drive/directory associated with the IIS Virtual Server SharePoint is running in. I needed to obtain this information programmatically and on-the-fly so it would work regardless of how or where SharePoint was installed. I am familiar with what information could be obtained using the SPGlobalAdmin class but it just didn't seem to get me everything I was looking for. After posting the question, I received the answer I was looking for fromDustin Mill...(truncated)...

(Indexed 2006-04-07):
All three of my sessions at the SharePoint Connections Conference included a slide that outlined what tools I use in my development environment. I have received a few e-mails asking if I would list all of those products here and where they can be found. I have pulled all of this information together in the following article:SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Development Environment
SharePoint Connections Conference - PCS204 Session Delivered on Live Meeting
(Indexed 2006-04-07):
SharePoint Connections ConferenceOrlando, FloridaSession - PCS204 : Real World Solutions - Managing Projects with SharePoint and Microsoft OfficeAs many know, my Tuesday afternoon session at the SharePoint Connections Conference was a bit frustrating because I ran into technical difficulties. I did end up having an open Q/A with all attendees and ultimately received great reviews for the session. However, I am really not comfortable with what happened and askedShareSquared andMSD2D if we could r...(truncated)...
DevConnections, Orlando : Day 3 : Ground Zero
(Indexed 2006-04-05):
Today was another exciting day at the conference. My 8am session on SOA/Web Services went okay; I'm my worst critic and always feel I can improve. An hour just never seems to be enough time, there is so much I want to share about these technologies. In addition, there is such a diverse group of individuals in these sessions, I could never make everyone happy! I had many attendees that were very interested in my second session which was to demonstrate advanced list and site customization using Fr...(truncated)...
DevConnections, Orlando : Day 2 : Ground Zero
(Indexed 2006-04-04):
When I arrived on Saturday I was feeling a bit nervous about making sure all of my session materials were safe and ready to go. If you have never prepared for a session of this nature, it can be very time consuming! Well, sure enough, my Virtual PC containing all of my Web Service materials for my first session Tuesday morning had crashed. I spent a couple of hours trying to regain control of the VHD but to no avail. So I spent the most part of my day today rewriting the session code; always see...(truncated)...
SharePoint Views - To Calculate or Not - That is the Question!
(Indexed 2006-04-04):
This is a simple tip that has been blogged about before but needs to be revisited because I read and respond to it in various forums. As you may be aware, there is a limit of 10 filter entries when creating a view for a list. Often, this can be overcome by using calculated fields; the following example shows how this might help.Let's say, for example, you have a list that contains a Status choice field. The values in that are "Not Started", "In Review", "In Development", "In Testing", "On Hold","...(truncated)...
Universal SharePoint Manager
(Indexed 2006-03-14):
I received a demonstration of theUniversal SharePoint Manager (USPM), fromiDevFactory, today. It isn't often that I am excited about a product, but this is certainly one of them. If you get the demo, which I highly recommend, don't let the simplistic user interface fool you into believing there is not a powerful set of utilities available from a single set of views. I downloaded the product last week, installed it on a VM and gave it a whirl. In no time I learned how much effort this will same m...(truncated)...

Content Editor Web Parts and Portal Security
(Indexed 2006-02-23):
This isn't the first time I have written about this; but I still haven't found a great solution so I thought I would throw it out there again. When working in an Portal environment, it is desired to keep the "look and feel" consistent throughout all Areas. To reduce training and support, consistent navigation and content location (at a minimum) is very important. The Content Editor Web Part is excellent for placing verbiage that doesn't fit well into a list; verbiage such as a welcome message, in...(truncated)...

BPM/Workflow Product Evaluation
(Indexed 2006-02-11):
Many may recall, last year I went through a BPM/workflow product evaluation and shared much of the information on my old blog. Today, I still receive countless e-mails asking me to further elaborate on my experience with various vendors and why I ultimately purchasedK2.net. As I have indicated in the past, there is certain information I have chosen to keep private and other information I have chosen to divulge to the community. My position on this has not changed; there is certain information I ...(truncated)...
WPPackager Going Away
(Indexed 2006-02-11):
Back on 1/10/06, Maurice told us that WPPackager was no longer going to be supported by Microsoft. The impact of this really didn't hit me until recently when I thought to myself; I have no intentions of making the transition from SharePoint SPS/WSS 2003 to the 2006/V3 product in a production environment with extensive testing. At Stewart, we have thousands of hours of work into our production system and any product upgrade always takes some time. At other locations, the costs associated with...(truncated)...

Dynamic Page Viewer Web Part
(Indexed 2006-01-08):
I had an individual in the public Microsoft SPS newsgroup ask about dynamically changing the URL of a Page Viewer Web Part. Unfortunately, when this Web Part was developed, there was no thought put to making the URL a connectable parameter. The only way I know of to change it is through the use of reflection.I searched the web to see if a Web Part existed and couldn't find one. So I wrote one and made it available here. Download it, use it and enjoy it!

More On Code Access Security
(Indexed 2005-12-29):
A couple of weeks ago, I posted anarticle about Code Access Security (CAS) and how toGet Out of the GAC. At that time there were still a few questions I had with regards to the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers attribute (APTCA); when it was appropriate to use and in what context. I exchanged a couple of e-mails with my buddy Maurice and he promised me a better explanation. Well I am happy to say, he followed through and really gave me a much better understanding of how all this comes together. I hig...(truncated)...
Migrating from SharePoint v2 to v3
(Indexed 2005-12-27):
Bil Simser recently posted an article titled "Keeping your head above you while everyone else is losing theirs..." which injected some pre-holiday season melodrama into our lives, but also spoke many truths. Lately I have been putting a lot of thought into the migration path from SharePoint V2 to V3, and to be honest, many have an extensive amount of work. I look at how certain business problems are being solved with complete disregard for simplifying the migration path. There are things we can ...(truncated)...
Advanced List Filtering - Using Input Parameters
(Indexed 2005-12-26):
I have had two individuals ask me this last week about filtering the contents of a list based on an item selected in another list. I am not referring to a standard Web Part Connection that simply connects two lists based on a certain column. The approach I am going to demonstrate uses a parameter for the filtered list so the manner in which it is it filtered can be customized. In addition, the parameter for the filter can be derived from another list, the Form Web Part, etc. So, instead of respo...(truncated)...

MSF Risks Management List Template for SharePoint
(Indexed 2005-12-18):
I have spent the last week during the evenings creating a custom list template for SharePoint. I have created countless list templates in the past but this one was a bit different and much more complex. My goal was to create a template for managing Project Risks and have all of the same abilities we have all come to love found in the Issues list. I wanted to be able to have related risks and the ability to maintain change history. Well, I finally have it done and working! The zip file containing...(truncated)...
Working with Complex List Templates
(Indexed 2005-12-12):
I have been deep into working with SharePoint List Templates lately and have learned quite a bit. The most prevelant thing I have learned is "there is virtually no documentation on the subject". I mean, anyone can find a lot of documentation on how to copy the CUSTLIST list, change the base type to 0 and add a few fields. I'm talking about REALLY working with List Templates; the stuff there is little to no documentation on.So here is some questions I have for anyone who has run across this in...(truncated)...
Get out of the GAC!
(Indexed 2005-12-06):
I work in an environment that is very fast paced. As a result, I am not always afforded the time to do things correctly, or the way I wish, the first time.I have a number of assemblies that contain code shared across many Web Parts. In the past, I always placed these shared assemblies in the GAC simply because it was the "easy way out". I had some extra time and thought it would be a good ... continue
