There are still seats available and I would love to have you join me for a week (April 27 - May 1st)learning how to effectively brand the SharePoint interface.A lot of my materials have been updated to include the latest tips and tricks I have discovered. Controlling Single Web Parts with CSS Article Posted
(Indexed 2009-02-25):
I often get questions about how can a particular web part be branded separately from all the rest or be branded by type. For example you want every Contacts list to have a green header bar instead of a tan header bar. Or perhaps you want a column of web parts on a page to look different than the main area that contains other web parts. The latter I have always had a solution for, the former I figured out something today. As with everything that I focus on, these are "no custom development" / "no ...(truncated)...
SharePoint Online - a solution for SharePoint hosting for small businesses
(Indexed 2009-02-24):
I recently got a question from James in Australia about the challenges small institutions face with using and deploying SharePoint. I know a lot of people are in this position where they want to use SharePoint but don't have the resources to support hosting it internally. You can check out Microsoft Online Services, they offer SharePoint hosting via SharePoint Online. http://www.microsoft.com/online/sharepoint-online.mspxHope this helps, thanks James! [Image]
Random Design Bits for SharePoint OTW....
(Indexed 2009-02-09):
I often sit and stare at the computer screen wondering what on earth I should blog about. I guess I work with SharePoint branding too much on a daily basis to have particular items stand out to me that say "Hey, blog me!". In an effort to get out helpful bits, I am turning to my blog comments. I unfortunately don't have time to address all the great comments people send me, but I have saved them all. I am going to start picking questions at random to answer here on my blog in hopes of helping ou...(truncated)...

To Breadcrumb or not to Breadcrumb?
(Indexed 2008-08-21):
User Interface Engineering has posted an article about breadcrumbs, and why they feel that breadcrumbs are a design cop-out. It is a good read, especially for people using SharePoint for external facing sites. Design Cop-out #2: BreadcrumbsPersonally, I only utilize page breadcrumbs when working with administering lists and settings. The breadcrumb provides a quick way back to list screens and other setting screens where otherwise no navigation is provided. For that purpose I think they can be u...(truncated)...
SharePoint Breadcrumbs - Sample of differences, chart of uses and resources
(Indexed 2008-08-13):
I don't think I am alone when I say "I hate the page level breadcrumb in SharePoint". While dead useful for users, it becomes a bit nightmarish for devigners. For this post I am going to ignore the Global Breadcrumb that appears in the upper left of a SharePoint site by default, because honestly most people hide it and it doesn't cause near the heartburn as the page level breadcrumb. Some background.... the page level breadcrumb (from this point forward just called breadcrumb) is included on the...(truncated)...
A Bit More About Disabling Themes in Master Pages
(Indexed 2008-08-13):
Randy Drisgill came across a great challenge and weird issue with SharePoint in regards to disabling themes on custom master pages. I wanted to expand a bit more on what he has posted about. Themes can wreck havoc on master pages since by default theme styles are called after regular SharePoint styles. Depending on your changes, themes may leak through via changing styles you did not, or if you used the Alternate CSS property in Master Page Settings to call your custom styles. The Alternate CSS ...(truncated)...

If you are using SharePoint Designer (SPD) to create a master page file that will then be placed on the web server for use, such as with a custom site definition or custom Feature, you may run into the following error when viewing or creating a new site:Cannot convert type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls.ScriptLink' to 'System.Web.UI.IAttributeAccessor' This may be caused by the method you used to get your custom master page file out of the content database. Big Update to CSS Reference Chart
(Indexed 2008-07-02):
I have posted a large update to my SharePoint 2007 CSS reference chart. In addition to adding some new styles and tips, I have added "Copy to Clipboard" functionality that will copy the CSS source code for the given style to your clipboard, so you don't have to chase down styles by looking up line numbers. Instead you can just do a copy, paste into your CSS file, and make modifications from there. The only section I did not do this for was the calendar, because I have previously posted all the c...(truncated)...

DOCTYPES and SharePoint
(Indexed 2008-01-25):
I got asked by two separate friends of mine just within a few days of each other if I had any recommendations for what DOCTYPE tag should be used in SharePoint. Honestly up until that point, I had not put a lot of thought into outside of the attitude of look up whatever A List Apart recommends and use that. So I delved into it a bit more and now I do have an opinion on the matter. A little info first, DOCTYPE is short for Document Type Declaration. A DOCTYPE associates a web page with a Document...(truncated)...
UPDATED: Base Master Page
(Indexed 2007-12-10):
Please note that there has been two typos in my Base Master Page file. I have uploaded a corrected version and it is available on the Base Master Page web page on my site. Typo 1In the HEAD area of the master page, the SharePoint tag pulling in the Theme was before the SharePoint tag pulling in all of theCSS files. This resulted in overriding your custom themes with the default SharePoint CSS styles which meant you canceled out any Theme you applied. In your existing master pages, make sure the ...(truncated)...

Turning a Master Page into a Theme
(Indexed 2007-10-04):
I got asked a question I have never heard before, so I decided to post a reply here.Q: Can you turn a SharePoint master page into a theme?A: Depends. I know, awful answer, but it really does depend on what you have done in your master page. Master pages control more design elements than a theme does. So depending on how you created those changes, they may or may not translate over to a theme. SharePoint uses a set of CSS styles. Some of those styles are referenced in the user controls like Searc...(truncated)...

Can't unpublish a page? Not easily at least...
(Indexed 2007-02-06):
Today I came across what I believe to be a shortcoming with MOSS 2007. There doesn't appear to be a way to quickly unpublish a page through the user interface. When you go to the settings for a page, you can choose to unpublish the version of the page, but if there are multiple versions of the page, then you have to go through and manually unpublish each version. Right now this isn't a huge deal since most pages probably only have 1 or a small handful of versions, but as time goes on, unpublishi...(truncated)...

SharePoint 2007 2-way sync with Oulook Calendars
(Indexed 2006-12-08):
I just discovered that SharePoint v3 / 2007 has a two way sync with calendars in Outlook, whereas before it only had a one way sync in the v2 / 2003 version. So you create a Calendar in a SharePoint site, then go under Actions, select Connect to Outlook. Outlook will then ask you if it is OK to link to the site, etc. Once you have added the site to your Outlook, you can drag/drop events from yourmain calendar, or create new events directly in the SharePoint calendar. SharePoint 2007 URL Quick List
(Indexed 2006-11-30):
I did a URL quick list for SharePoint 2003 some time ago and found it rather handy. With SharePoint 2007 I didn't think it would be very useful since the Site Actions menu has been improved so much. But I find that while in MOSS site collections it is a pain to navigate to and from sites to get tothe various settings for content types and galleries and what not, so I put this list together for faster navigating. SharePoint 2003 Installs Beware, Users Can Edit With SharePoint Designer
(Indexed 2006-11-29):
For anyone out there who has stopped users from being able to edit SharePoint sites via FrontPage using the DisableWebDesignFeatures attribute in the Project tag of ONET.XML, be aware that users will be able to edit the site (customize/unghost) with SharePoint Designer! So this technique will only stop users from editing your site with FronPage 2003, and will not stop users of previous versions of FrontPage, or of SharePoint Designer. Another wish for the next version of SharePoint
