SharePoint 2010 + OCR + Tiff + iFilters

(Indexed 2010-07-23):

Wow, long time no post; not that there wasnt anything to blog about just a serious amount of 2010 work out there :) Well some good news here; the TIFF iFilter available in Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 allow you to search the text in .tiff scanned documents; this is because it does OCR on the fly. How to get it working: Add the TIFF feature to your indexing server. Add the Windows 2003 indexing role to your indexing server. Start the indexing service on your indexing server. Enable TIFF OC...(truncated)...

Error when creating an SSP - "Unable to Create SSP - Provisioning failed: Windows NT user or group 'XXXX' not found

(Indexed 2010-04-14):

A colleague of mine encountered this error when attempting to configure a new SharePoint install from scripts. After some soul-searching and much swearing, we found the error to be caused by SharePoint not liking its accounts to contain Fully Qualified Domain Names. He had specified all of the accounts (farm creation acc, search accounts, app pools etc.) to be something like "Domain.QualifierAccountName".The resolution was to specify the accounts like "DomainAccountName".As this was scripted, we...(truncated)...

Creating a Kerberos-authenticated MOSS Farm by Script

(Indexed 2010-03-29):

I recently had a requirement to use a scripted approach to create a SharePoint farm that used Kerberos authentication.A quick bit of research pointed me towards the excellent resources made available by Gary Lapointe (see his blog at http://stsadm.blogspot.com/).Gary has created and made freely available a huge number of really useful custom STSADM commands and Powershell commandlets, as well as going through the code used to create them. It really is an excellent resource he has created, and w...(truncated)...

Squashing the SharePoint's SPHttpApplication Memory Leak

(Indexed 2010-02-17):

A (rather major) memory leak has been found in SharePoint, caused by the failure of SPHttpApplication objects to be properly cleaned up - read all about it in Todd Carter's great post The Sharepoint Sasquatch Memory LeakI have quickly whipped up a WSP that implements Todd's fix and thought I would attach it here for anyone else who might find it useful. It simply deploys a DLL to the GAC which implements the classs he describes in his post. I have done it as a WSP so that the DLL will be auto ...(truncated)...

Let the Fun begin

(Indexed 2009-12-09):

Well, I've been with my new employer for three weeks now. It turns out that they are one step further forward than my previous employer, but they have made some of the 'mistakes' that I was trying to avoid at my old place already. For example, the intranet is being migrated (from a lovely( - not!) InterWoven CMS) with a completely free hand. No concepts of IM or DM are being implemented - it's a complete free-for all. The search isn't even being tweaked from what comes OOB. If I've learnt any...(truncated)...

SharePoint 2007: RSS Viewer Web Part and Kerberos

(Indexed 2009-11-02):

Went to a customer who had setup Kerberos but the RSS Viewer Web Part was still throwing the does not support authenticated lists message, even though Kerberos was setup 100% correctly. Turns out the issue was with the FQDN of the sites, they had http://portal.company.co.za as their default mapping which RSS does not seem to like, once I added an internal default mapping to point to http://portal the RSS Viewer worked 100%. So the customer still access SharePoint using http://portal.company.co....(truncated)...

The Mystery of the 1 to 30 Usage Log Files

(Indexed 2009-10-27):

*insert spooky music* Ok so here is one that truly shows that I have no social life: a customer once asked me why can we specify 1 30 usage log files, when configuring usage analysis processing?, the answer to which at that time was not entirely sure, but I know if you hit 30 it will stop recording usage data" at least that is what the docs say :) So, I left it for a while but then a mate asked the same question and days of working with WSS 2.0 started itching in my brain, this is what I found...(truncated)...

The sneaky content deployment job

(Indexed 2009-10-19):

The other day I ran into an issue where the admins were seeing an Event ID in the application log that indicated that a content deployment job had failed. Well the actual details were something like this: content was copied successfully to the destination server, but could not find the web app to import into. Now, content deployment jobs in this scenario had been stopped and deleted a few months back and the admins did not know why this was happening, what I found was the following: There was s...(truncated)...

Change the location of MOSS user account environmental

(Indexed 2009-10-19):

A couple of things I have been noticing is that a lot of content ends up in the TEMP directory of the MOSS service accounts (think content deployment, workflow etc.) We all know that the default TEMP directory (if unchanged) is in the %userprofile%AppDataLocalTemp directory which lies on the %system% directory, what I have been doing during setup of MOSS is to ensure that this variable is changed so that any TEMP data is stored on a separate disk. You will be surprised at how big the TEMP direct...(truncated)...

Kerberos, DCOM and Windows Server 2008

(Indexed 2009-10-19):

Here is an interesting little issue I came across the other day while setting up Kerberos on Windows Server 2008 R2: Everything went fine until I wanted to allow local activation permissions on the DCOM objects for the SharePoint service accounts, much to my surprise everything was disabled; it did not matter what account I was running with. Turns out you need to make a registry change to enable you to change DCOM permissions: Open RegEdit and locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesAppID{CLSI...(truncated)...

Windows Server 2008 R2 and Blank Central Admin Sites, IIS_IUSRS

(Indexed 2009-10-19):

So got another interesting issue where a mate of mine said that after installing SharePoint 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2 that they were unable to see the CA site. The interesting part is that there were no errors and viewing the source of the site showed ony beginning and ending HTML tags. I recalled that this environment was installed using "Least Privileged" account mode (no local admin access being one section). So away I go and boot my 2008 R2 VM, configure the same security setting, and w...(truncated)...

More 2008 and Kerberos: Authentication Denied, app pool account being ingnored

(Indexed 2009-10-19):

Wow, what a day for Windows Server 2008 and Kerberos. There is a new step now that needs to be performed in order to get Kerberos working correctly. One of the major changes incorporated into IIS 7.0 is that Kernel mode authentication for Windows Authentication is performed by default. So what does this mean? Well, HTTP.sys (which by default runs as the local system account) is now being used to handle the authentication, this essentially means that application pool account used for your SharePo...(truncated)...

Wave Goodbye and Say Hello

(Indexed 2009-10-05):

Odd as it is, after all the whining and 'umming' and 'ahhing' I've done on here about my current employers inertia with SharePoint, I shall soon be swapping employer and working to implement SharePoint to replace another Intranet. I'm hoping, as I was needed for 1st Nov for delivery of SharePoint, that it is a done deal, and that there is a plan for its deployment that I don't have to be responsible for. It will be great if I'm just an Admin straight away and can get on with using SP rather th...(truncated)...

SUGUK - request for new organizers

(Indexed 2009-08-20):

Steve Smith and I have been running SUGUK for over three years now. We've seen the group grow from a few members meeting at a pub in Paddington to around 200 people attending meetings in London and sessions organized around the country. We've thoroughly enjoyed running the group, and the friends we've made doing so. We've decided however with the release of SharePoint 2010 in the near future now is a good time to step down from our roles as organizers and give some other people the chance to get...(truncated)...

Share and Share Alike - Pointless or what?

(Indexed 2009-07-20):

Well, it's been a while since I last blogged, it's been a busy old time at work and I've also had a bit of a holiday in amongst it all.The Intranet Replacement project (using SharePoint) has been put on ice until January 2010, pending the creation of a stronger business case, but meanwhile, the pilot SharePoint sites that were set up are going to be (wait for it.....) operationalised...... whatever that means. :-SOur SharePoint partner has made it quite plain that a full review of the pilot site...(truncated)...

Beware Application Pool Changes and the IIS Metabase.XML

(Indexed 2009-07-01):

Woohoo! So here was a weird one (I love these). I recently came across an issue where all the images for SharePoint 2007 were not being displayed (little x instead of image). After much investigation it turned out that the problem was with the IIS Metabase file, what had happened was that the web application pool for the web application had been changed (not just the account) and although the metabase.xml file was updated with the new web application pool not ALL of the settings in the metabase....(truncated)...

AD property changes not synchronizing in SharePoint 2007?

(Indexed 2009-05-29):

Here is a nice one: Problem: User has a property changed in AD (like surname when married) Changes do not reflect in SharePoint 2007 when you view the user Troubleshooting and Solution: First check that none of your content databases are in offline mode, if they are then changes will not be able to be written to them. Check that you are not having any synchronization events in the event log, this can happen if you previously moved a content database to another Web Application / moved SSPs wi...(truncated)...

Attaching content databases, where did my root site collection go?

(Indexed 2009-05-20):

Got to love SharePoint 2007, you learn / encounter something new everyday :) I recently got a request to help resolve an issue with a missing root site collection after a backed-up content database attach procedure. What happened was that the user had created a web application to attach the backed-up content database to, when they attached the content database and browsed to the root site they did not see the content they expected. What caused this is as follows: Person created site collection ...(truncated)...

Kerberos Checklist

(Indexed 2009-05-19):

So the other day I felt like a real chop as I assumed something was done while I was setting up Kerberos, we all know that assumption is mother of all youknowwhats. So here I have put together a Kerberos Checklist which should help to troubleshoot the main issues related to the setup of Kerberos in your SharePoint 2007 environment. Check list here Hope this helps :) Regards, Doug[Image]

Time to Share

(Indexed 2009-05-18):

Well we now have a Functional Spec for our SharePoint Portal deployment (to replace the intranet, integrate a knowledge repository, provide project sites....and one day be used to replace share drives on file servers) , and very interesting it is too. Already it seems that we aren't quite up scratch for SharePoint, and equally SharePoint isn't entirely up to scratch for us. Allow me to elaborate......Where SP isn't quite up to it:I already had the feeling that MOSS was 'jack-of-all-trades' rat...(truncated)...

Adding two forests with different authentication accounts to people-picker

(Indexed 2009-05-14):

from www.sharepointhack.net: Earlier I spoke about how you can tell the people-picker control to look up a list from a different domain. Now what happens if you need people-picker to look up users from two different domains and each domain has a separate account that needs to be used to view users? The answer is quite simple; you can append another domain with a separate user account to the "stsadm -o setproperty -pn peoplepicker-searchadforests" command: stsadm -o setproperty -pn peoplepic...(truncated)...

Infrastructure update and Kerberos (SP2 included)

(Indexed 2009-05-13):

Note to all of those out there that are using / planning to use Kerberos authentiction in your SharePoint 2007 environments: if you have applied the Infrastructure Update you will need to modify the registry to support new SPN naming conventions and then add these SPN accounts to the SSP service account. Details can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263449.aspx#section14 As if we did not need more steps to configure Kerberos ;) Regards, Doug[Image]

Pointless

(Indexed 2009-03-30):

Well it's even longer between this post and the previous two. Sorry. Time is just rolling away here and the work on this project is going slower than a dying snail. We will be having inital deep requirements workshops in April (yep only theee months after the original requirement workshops), but meanwhile the Head of IT here is giving little SharePoint sites to groups who can make use of them. (Indexed 2009-03-26):

As some of you may have seen we are soon to be launching a new job site specifically for SharePoint - the site is already up at www.sharepointjobsite.com .We've had a few issues recently with recruitment consultants posting jobs that haven't existed to get people to submit CV's. Crikey!

(Indexed 2009-02-05):

Well I can't believe that it has been so long since I last posted. Things have moved slowly here. The IT department has been 'playing' with SharePoint (and realised just how much they don't know, I think). We had our first design workshop yesterday - actually it was more like a requirements gathering exercise.....I'm gladdened to hear that we will be getting 2007, but a little sad that it will have to work with Office 2003 for a while, so it won't be quite as 'sexy' as it could be.I can see q...(truncated)...

people Picker not showing all domain users?

(Indexed 2009-02-05):

So you have successfully imported all the AD users into MOSS and can search them fine, now you have a problem where you are not able to see all of these users in the people-picker. One of the main causes of this is that when you specified the AD connection, you were required to use a separate account as the farm account did not have access to traverse the relevant AD forest / domain. Another reason this can happen is that your MOSS servers belong to a separate domain as the AD user domain. You w...(truncated)...

Kerberos on Windows Server 2008 & SQL Server 2008 Gotcha

(Indexed 2009-02-03):

Ok, so setting up keberos for MOSS on Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2008 is somewhat different from how you would set it up in earlier versions. This post lists the gotcha you should be aware of rather than step by step instructions on how to configure everything (if you set up Kerberos before you will know what to do). The Windows Server 2008 portion is from the brilliant mind behind harbar.net :) SQL Server 2008: If you are following the least privileged method for your MOSS accounts you will ne...(truncated)...

SPUtility - worth a look

(Indexed 2009-01-14):

[Image] I'd seen references to SPUtility before, and probably even used the object when basing code of blog posts I'd found on the net, but inspiration struct me the other day, and I decided to look it up in the SDK. It is a static object that contains a number of useful functions - it also contains a number of obsolete functions, and some downright weird ones (like SPUtility.HideTaiwan and SPUtility.IsEastAsia strike me as ones that won't be widely used). To access the object, you need to add...(truncated)...

A catch using SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges

(Indexed 2009-01-05):

[Image] In a Page Visitor Tracking web part I have been writing, I use the SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges function to add or update a line in a Visitor Tracking list on the current site. The idea being that not all visitors to the page will have the rights to write to this list, so some level of impersonation is needed. Creating a SharePoint Development Virtual Machine - Part II

(Indexed 2008-12-24):

[Image] The thought occured to me that my previous article on this subject detailed how I go about building a nice clean development environment, but not what the next steps were, i.e. getting a working copy of the production web application on that environment. Hopefully, this article will show you how. So, assuming you have got a vm which has SharePoint installed on it, but not really configured, and with no web apps (as it would be after following my previous article), the next steps I foll...(truncated)...

Creating a SharePoint Development Virtual Machine

(Indexed 2008-12-22):

[Image] Thought I would detail the steps I follow when creating a stand-alone development vm for SharePoint, and some of the software I like to have on one. I tend to use VMWare Workstation for my vm's as I like the interface, but Microsoft's Virtual PC works just as well, with the (huge) added advantage of being free. I've not tried MS Windows Server 2008 as yet as it is not used at any of the business locations I have worked at, so this guide covers using Server 2003 - though I expect the ...(truncated)...

Content Deployment and space

(Indexed 2008-12-07):

When deploying content through content deployment jobs you may want to check how much space you have available. Not so well documented is the fact that content deployment jobs will require you to have some space available on the drive where the account running the SharePoint Timer service has its local temp folder (in the user profile). I only realised this today when investigating a content deployment failure, what happens during a content deployment is the following:Timer collects the content d...(truncated)...

SharePoint licensing; confused? You will be.

(Indexed 2008-11-16):

Someone who shall remain nameless once told me that with regard to SharePoint licensing, If you dont get the answer you want, ask again. There is no doubt that there is (still) a huge amount of confusion on this subject. It is one of the most common issues that clients ask me to advise on. There are many blog entries which attempt to explain the various nuances and complexities of the subject, and I wont attempt to do that here. But here is an example of why this subject is so difficult. Fir...(truncated)...

Logging in Context

(Indexed 2008-11-10):

[Image] I think everyone agrees that proper error trapping and logging is a good idea - how else are you supposed to be able to work out what has gone wrong on a production system where you can't simply connect Visual Studio up and start debugging? But too many times I have seen logging calls where the developer simply captures an exception and logs its .Message - this is lazy, and in an environment which has multiple web-front ends and hundreds (maybe thousands) of users, next to useless for...(truncated)...

Adding a Tree Control column to SharePoint

(Indexed 2008-11-10):

[Image] One of the things that SharePoint is lacking out-of-the-box is a tree control field type. In a recent project, we required one, so that list items and document library items could be tagged appropriately using hierarchical in-house taxonomies. Additional requirements for this tree control included that multiple nodes in the tree were able to be selected, and that the data displayed in the tree could be maintained by non-IT Admin staff. Luckily, SharePoint allows you to define and create...(truncated)...

Creating a Custom Action

(Indexed 2008-10-31):

[Image] SharePointlets you customize just about anything, and one of the things I haveused in various features a few times is a custom action in the dropdownmenu for list items. Here I will briefly go through how to define acustom action in a feature. [Image] Thisdropdown menu is known as the Edit Control Block (ECB), and it is oneof the many places SharePoint lets you define a custom action. Inthis example, my feature will create a document library, and associatea custom action with it. Tthe...(truncated)...

How to find out what alerts are queued to go by SharePoint

(Indexed 2008-10-31):

[Image] Sometimesit may not be possible to actually receive an alert email on yoursystem - maybe its a dev environment that doesn't support email, orexchange might be throwing a hissy fit, or maybe you just don't want towait for the email to filter through to you. Creating an SPUser Object from a "Person" type list field

[Image] I was quite suprised that creating an SPUser object from theinformation contained in a "person" type list field is notstraight-forward. After trying a few ways myself, I decided it wastime to hit the search engine. I found the solution on this Microsoft Forum discussion: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3118673&SiteID=1 The trick is, you must use the SPFieldUser classes to return theobject. The code below shows how this is achieved (taken directly fromthe discuss...(truncated)...

[Image] Sometimes, you just need to know the trick...... Recently was scratching my head over a problem I encounteredwhilst developing a solution on my virtual machine. I had to load a lotof data from spreadsheets in to custom lists within MOSS. No problems, just what the datasheet view is built for. So I created my list, switched to the datasheet view, and copiedand pasted the data in. I was then shown an error: "Cannot connect tothe server at this time". Previously the all pages of a certain type had the contact details of the person who was responsible for the information on the page as indiviual controls:Name of PersonTelephone of PersonEmail Address of PersonAuthors had to type these details in individually, so I thought to myself "there has to be a way to include u...(truncated)...

The new IT head goes and buys Sharepoint licences and XP licences (yep, we're only on 2000 at the moment).I can still hear the IT department whimpering, and to me it sounds like a world of possibilties and a possible world of pain. Creating the .master page for the contextual search redirect

Here I talk about how to modify a new master page to include the contextual search redirect box (covered in my earlier post: Part 1).I thought it might be a good idea to display the contextual search box in left navigation bar, my reasoning being that a contextual search is like the other quick launch items in being "site specific" - but hey; it's really up to you.Modify the layout of your search boxIn order to display the search box correctly in the left navigation / quick launch area, we are g...(truncated)...

Customization Planning and pre-emptive steps - Food for thought?

(Indexed 2008-03-06):

We all know the pitfalls of messing around with default MOSS files and that the basic rules are always to create and modify your own rather than the defaults. One of the main reasons for this is ongoing support for the product from MS (they wont support cusomised changes to defaukt files) as well as the impact of service packs and hotfixes (they generally overwrite default files and hence any changes you made to them). Now in most cases we dont always know about changes we need to make, and when ...(truncated)...

SharePoint Conference 2008: A slight shift in focus and ideas for User Group sessions

This is the third SharePoint Conference that I have been to in the past 13 months; two offical Microsoft events and the DevConnections event in November last year. I have noticed a subtle shift in the content in this event. Office documents open read-only in Internet Explorer

(Indexed 2008-02-04):

There have been some issues with users that when they select a document link in SharePoint 2007 they do not get prompted to edit the document; instead the document opens directly in "Read Only" mode. This is a known issue with Office 2003 and MOSS 2007, the easiest way to fix this is to install any Office 2007 component / to modify the registry keys as outlined in this MS KB article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853[Image]

Showing and Hiding the QuickLaunch / Treeview

(Indexed 2008-01-29):

There are a few posts out there that tell you how you can show / hide the QuickLaunch / Treeview menus, but most of them did not really work out so well for me. So here is how I did it through cusomized master pages:Open your / a default master page (obviously better to have your own) i nyour favorite editor. Adding folder structure to document library feature / site definition

(Indexed 2008-01-14):

When creating custom Site Templates (features, definitions - whichever you prefer), one of the things most clients want is a document library included in the Site Template with a pre-defined folder structure. So I thought I would share my solution for creating a document library with a pre-populated folder structure as it is becoming more popular as of late. Now there are actually 3 different methods of doing this: Through the ONET.XML file in your custom Site Template Through the manifest.xml fi...(truncated)...

SD | Limitation with content types

Crappy limitation I have found with SharePoint Designer and workflow: you are unable to instruct the workflow to create a new content type in any list - this would have solved my earlier problem quite nicely if it were able to. Why i love Sharepoint

(Indexed 2006-06-28):

Here are some of the reasons i love working with Sharepoint: 1)The main reason why i love SharePoint: It go's a long way to solving business problems of effective collaboration and knowledge retention + retrieval + management in the workplace (and the next version will improve this even further).2) Sharepoint touches so many technologies and doesnt confine you to a limited space in your information department. You are always growing and learning. How many .Net Developers do you know that get to...(truncated)...

Microsoft Office 2007 : User Experience : New Features (Ribbon, Live Preview, Galleries, Mini Bar "Floatie", Keyboard Navigation,Bottom Status Bar and the File Menu)

(Indexed 2006-06-18):

Remember the notorious paperclip in previous Microsoft Word versions? The reason Microsoft introduced this functionality was to HELP the user find functionality. It backfired. Most people found it annoying as it distracted the user from what they were doing. But the problem remained, how do you allow users to find functionality efficiently, especially when with the growing number of new features? May Round Up

(Indexed 2006-05-31):

Yesterday evening saw the final regional user group meeting for May. This month has seen us try something a little different with smaller meetings hoping to get a lot more interaction between people attending. Over the 3 meetings around 40 people attended and hopefully now know a little bit more about SharePoint 2007. I know I've definitely learnt some new things. We're keen to get your feedback on the May meetings. Did you enjoy them, were the smaller meetings and discussion/presentation format ...(truncated)...

Ullesthorpe Court User Group Meeting roundup

(Indexed 2006-05-31):

Last night saw the final user group meeting of May being hosted by Combined Knowledge at Ullesthorpe Court. Around 10 of us got together with a mixed range of SharePoint experience. Craig presented first giving the new SharePoint users a quick tour. He then did a walk through creating a new SharePoint base site first in 2003, and then in 2007, so that people could see the difference between the new version. We held the meeting in the same informal format with people asking questions and discussi...(truncated)...

SharePoint Links 26/05/2006

(Indexed 2006-05-26):

One of the things that came from the user group meeting last night was that people have trouble finding new SharePoint articles out there. I read a number of SharePoint blogs so suggested doing a (mostly) daily link drop of interesting SharePoint related articles out there. Let me know your feedback on this. You may feel it'll clutter up the front page, but if you find the links useful then I'll keep doing it. So to get us started here are todays! Windsor User Group meeting roundup

(Indexed 2006-05-26):

Hot on the tails of the London roundup post comes the round up of the Windsor meeting held yesterday evening. 8 of us including 2 from Dot Net Solutions (Tim and myself) met at our offices here in Windsor. This was always going to be a much smaller meeting with a limit of 10 as we were holding it in our board room. All the members attending hadn't seen much or used SharePoint 2007 so it was a good chance for them to have a close look at it and ask questions as they came up.It was only me present...(truncated)...

London User Group meeting roundup

(Indexed 2006-05-26):

Finally got round to post about the meeting we had on Monday. Many thanks to CSF who came to our rescue with a venue after a mix up with room bookings. Around 20 people attended which enabled us to have a good presentation/discussion/questions type session which is exactly what we were trying for. A two hour presentation with a couple of questions at the end is fine but that type of thing could be watched via a webcast. Getting people who are attending involved is what it's all about. Now Beta2 ...(truncated)...

Rather than try to organise two similar events so close to each other, we've decided to suggest that user group members attend the Microsoft meeting on the 25th.Although not an official user group meeting, I think there will be quite a few of us there. How to stop Zip Files from Corrupting out of Sharepoint

(Indexed 2006-01-25):

Another common question that I answer in the newsgroups is when zip files get corrupted when downloaded from Sharepoint document libraries. I have written a quick ' how to ' guide on this now and can be downloaded from our files section - http://www.combined-knowledge.com/Downloads.htm .In principal though it is all to do with an incorrect setting in IIS that needs to be changed to stream the zip file rather than compress it when leaving IIS.[Image]

What can we do with all the 'Web 2.0' API's

(Indexed 2006-01-05):

Firstly I'd just like to say I hate the term Web 2.0. How can a group of marketing people who are after a quick buck give the web a new number as though they created version 2 of it! Apart from that there are a lot of useful API's out there that people are using to 'mashup' new sites. These sites can use the ebay API to display things in a different way, or mashup 2 api's to merge data, eg Amazon and ebay products. There's a list of all webservices and api's at Programmable Web.I'd be interested...(truncated)...
